Rhapsody in Blue.

Today's Tids Issue 3,037
Opening Stuff:

I like music of all kinds. Mainly though, I like that which has a sense of authenticity. For instance, classical, blue grass and country before Nashville were inherent representations of the eras. The big band music was a product of musicians still attached to the jazz eras and not promoters. Early rock and roll was root music, often the product of blacks playing in back rooms and Ho-houses. R&R lost it’s soul when merchandisers brought us the Pat Boones and even Elvis – if I’m allowed to be a but sacrilegious. I like earthy rock bands that can move souls without lights and lunacy. I like what reflects the purity of the musicians mind. I like vanilla Ice Cream and Plain pizza for the same reason.

For me, it was rolling on the floor in uncontrollable laughter when I heard that the Tax, Fine for not getting ObamaCare was being officially called, “Shared Responsibility Payment”. Yeah right, shared responsibility, so voluntary that they are calling upon one of the 4 0r 5 most intimidating Government organizations in the world, the IRS, to enforce it. Is that like it takes a village to share responsibility – The 0-Man/Hill Doctrine. I think ACA  is the next step towards a police state. Shared responsibility, my foot. Forced slavery is more like it.

The Question:
Who are considered the Top Ten Athletes turned Actor? Hint: Olympic swimmers Esther Williams is 31 and Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan) is 26.

The Headlines:

So Boehner and Obama met for the first time in a year and a half. This in itself is kind of odd considering that the two are listed as 1 and 3 on the Government depth charts. The pics look good, both with green appearing ties going for an early connection with the Irish vote. But, what are the chances for cooperation? On the surface it appears that B could go to Nice to keep the House in November and O could go anti to take the house away. As usual, it probably means nothing.

American Idol singers are not looking too good so far. Last night, the first four couldn’t hit the notes and some were out of sync with the bands. Compared to The Voice AI is looking more like Amatuer Idol. It improved a bit as the night went on, but they had bette r get a couple of storng performers up front or here will be a lot of channel changing. Some of the best were Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, Alex Preston, Majesty Rose and Jena Irene. Not too bad were MK Nobilette, Emily Piriz and Sam Woolf.  Kristen O’Conner, Malaya Wilson, Dexter Roberts and CJ Harris will vie for the bottom three.

Yesterday it was everywhere as the TV press regaled and called in nutrition experts to comment about the 43% drop in children’s obesity rates. Even if you only knew that butter has fat and lettuce has none, you could have made a TV debut, the demand for experts was so broad. In fact you may have known about as much as experts who seemed to have trouble explaining the drop. But let’s look at what really happened. The huge drop was for children 2-5. The malleable age, where parents can still say no. Looking further, the enormity of the drop probably meant that obesity was not a huge problem in that bracket in the first place. The rate fell from only 13% to 8%. Looking even further, there was no discernible improvement in ages of children and adults who could actually make their own decisions. So basically, people still like to eat what they like to eat and sit around doing nothing.

I watch these endless interviews of people in the frozen areas of the country and come away with the sense that some of these reporters and interviewees actually think the Government can change the weather. This is how pervasive government intrusions have become in the minds of some.

Tell the Truth; It’s Easier to memorize, Department:
Number one: Yesterday, the Washington Post Fact Checkers awarded the Admin the Three Pinocchio’s Award for it’s O-Care signup reporting.  Number two: Now Secretary Sebelius is chipping in with some fancy tap-dancing of her own saying neither she, nor anybody in the White House ever said that 7 million signups by March would be a goal. Maybe she didn’t, but that woman in the interview on the tape talking to NBC’s Nancy Snyderman on September 8th about 7 Mil sure looked and sounded like her. God help America.

If you are a camera company, and you’re not making cameras for phones, you’re probably going out of business.

Oscar Lavant was one of the all time great characters, and talents. And drunks, for that matter.

Oddly, the TV commercials for the two latest shows playing at the big Providence Theater, “Man of La Mancha” and “The Ten Tenors” both ended with “Impossible Dream”. There’s no truth to the rumor that the theater has been redesigned to appear as a gigantic elevator.

The Answer:
# 15 is Bubba Smith who is behind Burt Reynolds, Jim Brown, Chuck Conners and Fred Williamson. #10 is Andre “The Giant” Rene Roussinoff, and the moving towards number one we have Fred Dwyer, ed Marinaro, Bob Euker, Jason Lee, #5 Mark Harman, Merlin Olsen, Carl Weathers, Dwayne Johnson and of course at 31 – Arnold.

The link below from a delightful reader will bring you to an amusing and powerful portrait of George Gershwin:  I enjoyed it:
