Altering inevitability.

Today's Tids Issue 4.296
Is it time for The Kickoff yet?

Last night I felt those familiar rumbles in my stomach that will now grow in intensity as the showdown game between the Pats and the Chargers gets closer and closer. Internal aggravation is one of the great joys of being a fanatic.

If politicians could wait for time to make the changes and heel the wounds, we probably wouldn’t need much of the laws we have, and certainly wouldn’t have to endure all of the irritating politically motivated controversies.

In case you are wondering, investors are expected to be looking for “Value” stocks over growth stocks in 2019. Of course, that could change tomorrow as stock planning concept news often does.

Almost always I find that after several go-arounds on these multi-person text conversations, you just got to pick up the phone and talk to people to make everything perfectly clear. That’s why they call it a smart phone.

The Question:
Which popular band was founded by Donald Fagan? Bonus: Baseball bats of lore have been made of hickory. But, like everything else, things are achanging. Name three of the most popular woods now used in baseball bats.

In an effort to expand their industry, seeing eye dogs are selling their services to people blindly walking on busy streets looking at smart phones. (Thanks to Mother Goose and Grim)

The head of the San Diego Immigration Officers Union says that the current refugee harangue is based on and is a ruse. He said that the vast majority of those convinced by caravan organizers to invade the US never had any qualifications for refugee status. If you want to blame somebody for the chaos at the border, it is caravan organizers.

Why would anybody think that Nancy or Chuck would bargain in good faith after they got what they wanted with the lifting of the shutdown? I seem to remember once where GWB got sucked into comprise with Teddy K and immediately shafted after Ted’s legislative success.

A devious soviet pollinator spy is a KGB.

Maybe someday I’ll be old enough to begin reading AARP Magazine.

As I sit anticipating the remaining days of football, I find my heart turning to baseball. After all, the trucks go to spring training in less than a month. There is still nothing like the whack of a baseball against a hickory* bat! Have the Red Sox found a closer yet? From a distance, I’m seeing the Chicago White Sox loading up. Harper and Machado are still unsigned. Yes the wood is in the hot stove, and guessing games begin…now!

*See The Question above, or The Answer below.

I have found a lot of funny stuff while roaming through old documents related to ancestors. A contract of apprenticeship in London for a relative maned Thomas Barton required a lot, including: “He shall not commit fornication, or contract matrimony within the said term. He shall not play cards, dice or tables. He shall not haunt Taverns or Playhouses.” Call the ACLU!

It happened in France and it happened in England and Belgium and Sweden. And now it is happening in the US. White people are not producing enough babies to replace themselves. The fertility rates of blacks and Hispanics is rising, so over time the need for forced diversity may not have been necessary at all.

I’m one of those “Where there’s smoke, there’s probably fire” guys. Now Edward Buck is known more as a big Dem contributor than for his life’s work. That is until a second man died in his home from an OD. The story isn’t about political affiliations (Though some will make it that), but why the people with drug problems come to his home and subsequently die. You have to wonder how many others had near death surprises in his luxurious digs. Now authorities are wondering the same thing about this somewhat reclusive millionaire with fragile friends. Something is going on there, and you can bet it will be a mini-series coming to Netflix soon.

Funniest Headline Of the Morning: “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (nude) Bathtub Photo Debunked By Foot Fetishists.” Say what? (Not making that up – directly from Google News)

An orchestra director was second rate at best. He always had a problem getting the cymbal guy to bang away at the right moment. One day he said, ‘if you don’t get it right, I’ll kill you”. Sure enough, the percussionist missed it and the director pulled out a gun and shot him dead. He was arrested, tried and sentenced to death. Finally came the day, and he was sitting in the electric chair. The warden pulled the switch. Amazingly, nothing happened. The director looked up and said, Well, I was always a bad conductor.”

The Answer:
Donald Fagan was a co-founder of Steely Dan. Bonus: The hickory bats have been replaced by those of Bamboo and composite wood, but the favorite woods for professional bats are White Ash and Maple, chosen because of their density.

There is no reason to give in to anything, even if it is made to appear pre-ordained, because there is nothing stopping you from fighting for something better.

Well, that’s about it. It’s nice to hear the thumping of my heart for the Pats game drowning out political rhetoric.

The Parking Lot:
Characters form the 17th and 18th centuries.
“As food productivity in the (Plymouth) Colony fell, and the Hicks land became more stressed, the boys Samuel, Ephraim and Richard explored and finally pushed west over the years, often joining Squanto and his men. The three young men had learned well from the Pequot leader and felt comfortable with the land, and their new friends.
While the Massachusetts Bay Colony gained strength, Plymouth became wracked with dissent, forcing men like Roger Williams and John Clarke and woman truth seekers like Anne Hutchinson and yes, John Hicks’ wife Herodious Long to move to territories beyond Western Plymouth into what became Providence and Newport County RI.
The Three Hicks boys were content not to follow their often-unpredictable brother, but were satisfied and comfortable with what they found in Sakonnet, the lands that are now Tiverton and Little Compton RI. They were comfortable because they were so well accepted by the various Indian factions. They traded well and bought lands from the tribes, including the powerful Chief, King Phillip. By 1670, the boys had built widespread holdings and filled their lands with large families.
But, life was about to change, and the three would be faced with enormous challenges.”
The son of Richard was Jeremiah, an key character in the early part of the Hicks family development and the direct ancestor to Nancy Joachim, the woman in the Parking Lot:
“Jeremiah Hicks rode his large brown horse southeast from his father Richard’s lands through the well-traveled trails of western Plymouth Colony, which was comprised of today’s Bristol, Warren, Tiverton and Little Compton RI. Jeremiah, now a strong 15 years of age was comfortable in these Indian territories, as he had been taught well by his father Richard, who learned as a boy from Squanto.
On the way south the day in August of 1671 to the Wampanoag summer settlement of Fogland in Tiverton on the big bay named Sakonnet, Jeremiah was dreaming of the beautiful daughter of the third son of Massasoit. As he neared, several of the tribe were seen walking, and all acknowledge him, as a friend of the tribe. His father was certainly respected as a trader and their lands grew as the Indians gained trust. The family’s biggest problem now was the elders back in the Plymouth Colony who were placing more restrictions on their Indian ‘friends’.”
“He turned to see the dark haired, graceful Masetta, who like most of Massasoiett’s tribe had Anglicized names too. She was Elizabeth, and his beautiful Elizabeth was running towards him smiling. His young heart started pounding and he felt a warm glow. He looked around to see if the reddened face of the white man was noticed. Within seconds he was swinging himself off the horse and running towards her. But, like always he stopped short of enveloping her in his arms, as the curious and conservative elders looked their way. The two were eager, but now all they could do was look deeply into each other’s eyes.
Jermiah stood there for a moment, feeling her nearness only with the emotions he was having trouble restraining. They wanted to touch, maybe fingertips, but mothers were watching. The Wampanoag tribe was a matrilineal society, where women controlled land and trading. Where first homes of newlyweds were always within the homes of the mothers.”

Richard, Jeremiah and Masetta (Elizabeth) are characters driving the development of this story.
