Evolving and Adjusting

Today's Tids Issue 4,967

I still remember:

A piece of string walks into a bar and up to the counter. The bartender says, "Sorry mate, we don't serve pieces of string in here, get lost." Upset, the piece of string walks out the door. A sudden thought strikes him. He ties himself in a knot and messes his hair up. He walks back into the bar and approaches the counter. The bartender says, "Oh, aren't you that piece of string from before...? "No," says the piece of string, "I'm a frayed knot."

I have to tell you that every day I do learn something new. (Even bad jokes.) One of the great things is to understand that I don’t have to slow down just because I am old. And frankly, if you are learning in this rapidly evolving techno-world, then you are going to enjoy keeping up with all of the discoveries to come. But that doesn’t mean you have to forget about all of the good things way back when that helped you get to where to you are today. Like your basic principles that some today would have you alter. Like believing in the the Good ‘ole USA, and that families matter and that laws are to be respected -- Silly old stuff like that.

People who are getting Covid while vaccinated remind me of people who think they are entirely safe driving recklessly at high speeds in snow simply because they have 4-Wheel drive. You still have to work at controlling your own destiny, and use sound personal judgment.

The Question:

In 1954 the Boxing Hall of Fame opened. 24 boxers were named as the first group to enter. Who do you think five of them were? Bonus: When was the first radio broadcast of a baseball game and where?

A Baltimore chef considered very innovative and very good has as a favorite Cheeto dust covered soft shell crabs.

Some chefs will not accept anything that wasn’t created at the Culinary Institute. Even if it tastes amazingly good.

I have to say that I am hooked on Guy’s Grocery Games.

Do you ever jump into Google looking for a simple, fast answer to something only to find a confusing array of results? I’m finding that is happening more often lately. Is there just too much data to sort through now, or are AI algorithms playing games with each other and changing the way engines search?

66% of Republicans believe that the 2020 election was rigged. Only 18% of R’s believe that Joe won fair and square. Of the total respondents to his new survey, 28% of Independents and 3% of Dems believe Trump won. This Yahoo News/YouGov Poll was conducted during the week following the opening of the Jan 6 Inquisition.

I think Trump could have won if he could get past his ego and listen to advice.

I personally thought the attack on the Capitol as being akin to eth way third world governments are run. You know these newsreels you see of angry mobs in the Middle East or South and Central America, and you set there in front of your TV thinking, boy am I glad the USA isn’t like that. Whoever promoted an assault on the  Capitol as a good idea is not an American to me.

The Answer:

The first Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954 had Joe Lewis, Jack Dempsy, Henry Armstrong, John J Sullivan and Jack Johnson and 18 others. It was disbanded and in 1987 the current International Hall was developed with the same original six above plus greats like Gen Tunny, Rocky Marciano, Two Sugar Rays – Leonard and Robinson, Wille Pep, Sandy Saddler, Micky Walker, Barny Ross, Archie Moore, Benny Leonard, Sam Langford, Stanley Ketchel, Eder Jofre. Harry Greb, Joe Gans, Roberto Duran, Tony Cazoneri, Ezzard Charles and Mohammed “Cassius Clay” Ali. Believe it or not, there was a romantic golden age of Boxing, and it cut across all demographic segments. Bonus: KDKA in Pittsburgh in 1921 first broadcast a baseball game. Pittsburgh was home to a “Tech” company of the era, Westinghouse.

Beginning today, get used to seeing your sun setting gloriously before 8:00 PM util next spring. The good news is that it will be a while until the sun starts setting around 4:15. There’s always something.

The time ahead grows upon the time past. Hopefully not letting the good of the past reside forsaken along the road taken.
