Proud to be an American

Today's Tids Issue 5,203

Never give up:

BAM! Boom, KABOOM! Ah July. It always begins with fire in the sky and tends to end with suffocating heat. But in-between, summer comes alive. And what is better than celebrating America and the fourth. And freedom and independence and self-determination. Which always should be the substance if this great country lest it fades to mediocrity. Freedom to eat hot dogs and burgers and corn on the cob. And the endless array of summer salads. To stand on soapboxes and salute the flag. Feeling the baseball season heating up just as the NFL gets back into action. Personally, in July I have a lot of big special family occasions which allows me to rationalize away my sugar abstinence and in ice cream and cake. July, how sweet it is!

The sad thing is that a new Gallop poll says that a mere record low 38% of us are “Extremely Proud to be American.” When you add in “Very Proud” the total is still lower than I would expect at only 65%. And that is quite low compared to trend averages of 55% Extreme and a total of extreme and very at 80%. Repubs are more extremely proud than Dems but the Reupuns have dropped significantly since the alst measure in 2020. Currently it is Repubs 58%, Dems 26% and Indies 34%, That is pretty disturbing this great day honoring our courage in history.

Of course, the first of July is critical for measuring the first half of the economic year. Will there be profits in Q2? And most important, what will be the predictions for companies for the rest of the year.

And this from the Tids Quotester Laureate: “Even if a bear wears shoes ando socks he still has bear feet. Or she, of course. Or them

The Question:

Can you say anymore, “Survival of the fittest”? What person first said that?

The Headlines:

--Markets Sink After Opening In Positive Territory;

--America is Traveling; Airline Delays Expected.

--Putin Says Iron Curtain Is Descending.

-- Kyrsten Sinema Kills Filibuster Plan After Pledge to Work on Abortion; Dems Were Counting On Alteration to Fight SC Ruling.

--Russia Sending Rockets Into Odessa.

Neighborhood fireworks can be fun as long as you are not the one living next to the neighbor with the crackers.

The good news this morn is the significant easing of supply chain pressures which could easily lead to reduced inflation. Yay, he said feebly.

Sears and Roebuck could have been Amazon first. Maybe  the most important qualification of a good CEO is recognizing changing times and having the awareness and courage to make paradigm changes in a way that preserves the company while giving employees nee opportunities. The hardest part is moving away from a successful history. There are hundreds of companies and even industries srewn across the junk pile which couldn’t get past their personal and corporate egos.

Even the Boston Celtics held on to Larry Bird too long.

How do you make a tissue dance? Put a little boogie in it. Oh no, did I really write that here?

59 years ago today we suddenly found ourselves with a s zip code. Is that the day we all became numbers. Is that the day the mail workers stopped delivering to towns with white picket fees but only to homogenized classifications of resident.

I hear that one of the scariest books ever is “2034” by Eliot Akerman. It is scary because you know what is happening today on the world stage. So, what happens in this 2034 fiction is entirely plausible.

One of first things I learned in a college business course was the fate of the Buggy Whip manufacturers. I have never forgotten that.

I am proud of American history and greatness and will not waver, but I am disturbed with this sense of coddled citizens, and that entitlements seem to have overtaken self-determination and responsibility.

Can you say, crosswalks.?

Talk about change, how about college athletics. We may only have ten college football teams left who can afford to play in the new Millions for NIL world. Yesterday it was announced that USC and  UCLA, two of the giants in the PAC 12 will probably move to the Big 10. So much for old rivalries. So much for easy travel. Have they looked at the airline mess lately? The NCAA Is beginning to panic at this new idea that already seems out of control.  And we may see congress get into the pay to play act.

When the smog lefts, UCLA. Oldie but goodie.

States and towns in their beneficent largess are rapidly upping min wages ot $15. Since most of these wages are now in the $10 to $12 range, it means a portion of state and town payrolls will increase from 25 to 33%. And we are trying to fight inflation. Aren't we.

How do you get inside the minds of people without them knowing itI would say one good way is to divert their minds with amusement. And now Congress is saying Tik Tok is dangerous ot the security of the USA “TikTok is a widely-popular social media platform owned by the Chinese technology company ByteDance. Though its stated intention is to share short dance and lip-sync videos, it has become a substantial player in the targeted advertising business in recent years.” “The data TikTok collects from users contains sensitive information and is often taken without the user’s explicit knowledge.” “To use the platform, users grant the app access to the microphone and camera. Multiple lawsuits allege that TikTok also collects biometric data from users, including facial geometry, iris scans, voice recognition, and fingerprints.” “While TikTok claims all user data is stored in the U.S. and Singapore, TikTok’s parent company servers are all located in China...” If you want to read this Center for Internet Security Synopsis, go to:  https://www.cisecurity.org/insights/blog/why-tiktok-is-the-latest-security-threat

But don’t forget to come back and finish the Tids. A man tells his doctor, “Doc, help me. I’m addicted to Twitter!”

The doctor replies, “Sorry, I don’t follow you …”

The Answer:

In his “On the origin of the species,” Darwin wrote “The survival of the Fit.” He was borrowing form the original phrase “Survival of the Fittest” of Herbert Spencer, a 19th Century philosopher and social idealist, and strong supporter of Darwin. While coddling is becoming apparent in the newer generations, there are still plenty out there who know how to survive and create their own future.

Have a great Fourth of July Weekend, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!

I didn’t know how to end this issue, but after seeing that gallop Poll. I have to play tune:
