Today's Tids Issue 5,279

Philosophy is phun:

In case you missed it, Saturday was National Grouch Day. It felt great!

Actor Robbie Coltrane died and was remembered for his great work in the Harry Potter series of films. I remember him as the lead actor playing “Fitz” in one of my all-time favorite British TV series, “Cracker”. It attained worldwide recognition and became very popular in the USA. Of course, the Hollywood ding-dong opportunists decided to make their own version to capitalize on the popularity., They Americanized it to death. And of course, they replaced the wonderful Robbie with a glitz “actor”. It was awful. But Robbie Coltrane grabbed me in the original series, and I won’t forget that.

Speaking of great, was there ever a better co documentary series than “Victory at Sea”? Sorry, Ken Burns.

How to do you stop inflation when people don’t hesitate ot spend $10/Hour for parking for a weekend outing.

The Question:

Name five characters and their actors from the great TV series "Cheers”.

The Headlines:

--Wall Street Bangs One Out Of The Park; Investment Town Denizens Looking Forward To Good Earnings Reports This Week.

--Biden Launches Student Loan Bailout Applications Site.

--US Condemns Russia War Crimes After Drone Attack On Kiev Apartment Building.

-- The Supreme Court Refused To Reconsider The So-called "Insular Cases Of the Early 1900’s.

There have been 25 mass killings in the US do so far this year. A mass killing is described as 4 or more dead. There are even more slaughters that wounded many but where the deaths fell short of 4. I realize it probably impossible to stop reporting on them. But it seems that one mass killing sparks an idea in another potential mass killer's troubled brain.

Wagner’s Siegfried is full of beautiful music.

239 Years ago yesterday the Queen of France Marie Antionette was beheaded by an angry mob. You have to wonder today’s news media of today would handle it. From serious news to political news or entertainment news. And late-night comedians. This was the result of a mass attack on government institutions. There has to be a better way to resolve disagreement than physical attacking institutions.

I notice that hotels are putting lot of effort in to their gardens and bushes. My guess is it is due to the rapid increase in canine guests.

Our current Debt to GDP ratio basically precludes rational government action in the event of another crisis.

Xi, who is on the verge of becoming the first Chinese leader with three terms was not very shy yesterday about his objectives. Which are rather disturbing. Among them was to build up the military at a faster rate. And take away the Tawan independence, by force if necessary. I had always hoped that Xi would be happy winning without a shooting war through worldwide economic dominance.

One of several negatives about the Covid wage stabilization give away is that far too many lost the incentive to work. Below is a statement by a well-known University of Chicago philosopher who tries ot understand economic conundrums

"There is a philosophical conundrum at the root of all this: morality requires we maintain a safety net at the bottom that catches everyone—the alternative is simply inhumane—but we also need an aspirational target at the top, so as to inspire us to excellence, creativity and accomplishment. In other words, we need worth to come for free, and we also need it to be acquirable. And no philosopher—not Kant, not Aristotle, not Nietzsche, not I—has yet figured out how to construct a moral theory that allows us to say both of those things." Agnus Callard

Something to talk about on a park bench

The Answer:

Sam Malone was played by Ted Danson. I always liked Diane Chamber played by Shelly Long. And Norm Peterson and Cliff Clavin played by George Wendt and John Ratzenberger. I thought Coach played by Nicholas Colasanto was pretty good. I liked Rhea Perlman playing Carla Tortelli. I didn’t Like Kristi Alley as much as Diane and certainly not Woody Harrelson playing Woody Boyde. Frazier Crane by Kelsey Gramer and Dr. Lilith Sternin by Bebe Neuwirth were among my favorites.

Monday began nicely with a big jump-in on wall Street. Do you think they will make a week of it.
