It shouldn't be hard to smile.

Today's Tids Issue 5,366

Lugubriousness denied:

Today is,National Do a Grouch a Favor Day”. Thank you. I'll take anything I can get. Maybe I'll even smile for a minute or two.

Yesterday Nikki Haley lost the senior vote when she came out asking that all candidates over 75 take a competency test. How arrogant are our 50 something youths today.

One constant is that the stock market always sucks when the economy is bursting with pride over some great achievement like yesterday's retail sales number. On the other hand, the stock market roars when the economy is but a house of cards.

How about that awkward moment when you leave a store without buying anything and all you can think is "act natural, you're innocent".

I’m seeing the swelling of buds on Magnolia trees, and it is only February. I hope this isn't a joke on the trees. People who love magnolias will be happy. You just have to be happy for Magnolia blossom lovers. Maybe that will make me feel less grouchy.M

The Question:

Who was Howard Carter?

Remember when Pols were telling us that the USA would fall of a cliff if we didn't do something on Debt Ceiling Day a month or so ago. Now they are saying we are doomed by July.

Our Constitution needs an 11th Bill of Rights -- Freedom from fear mongering.

Today it was reported that credit card debt hit an all-time high at just under a Trillion Dollars, and delinquencies past 90 days accelerated at a dangerous rate eclipsing the days before the pandemic. (See yesterday's Tidlet on the consumer retail sales report.) Yes, people are spending more than they don’t have and there won’t be any covid largess coming from the Government this time. Inflation of product and service costs plus much higher interest rates on these loans is the nub of the problem that may hang around awhile.

The golf nation's eyes will be on Tiger woods walking today. He is in the big LA Riviera CC tournament, the Gensis. Ironically, he was driving away from this tourney in a Genesis Tourney car in 2021 when he had his big accident. Maybe he’ll win enough to pay for Uber.

Yesterday I was buying something at the deli counter, so while the minority clerk, a very good one btw, was slicing I was glancing around at the high-priced meats. I walked back to the clerk and remarked, “Wow the cost of deli meats has really soared.” She laughed and ranted, “Yeah, the damn government gives you $1200 buck for covid and now you can’t afford anything.” That my friends is why we have inflation. Too much free money dumped into the pot creating a false luxury and disrespecting responsibility.

The CEO of a large corporation was giving advice to a junior executive. “I was young, married, and out of work,” he lectured. “I took the last nickel I had and bought an apple. I polished it and sold it for a dime. The next day I bought two apples, polished them, and sold them for ten cents each.” “I see,” said the junior executive. “You kept reinvesting your money and grew a big business.” “No,” said the CEO. “Then my wife’s father died and left me a fortune.”

To me, Bitcoin's new surge is about as secure as having Gronk as your filed goal kicker.

Sadness in the Morning, Department:

There will be sobs acoming as Ryan Seacrest leaves Kelly Ripa alone on their popular mid-morning gabfest. We actually went to that show when it was Regis and Kelly, and for some reason during a long commercial break, Regis came over to our seats and talked to us. I told him that we have a small marketing business run by my wife and it didn’t pen until Regis and Kelly was over. He smiled. That is the way to run a business. First things first. Apparently, Kelly will be cohosted now with her husband who Mark who I don’t know.

Maybe you remember “Dorothy and Dick” on morning WOR radio? Yikes. Am I that old? The show always opened with, “Hi darling... Hi Sweetie... Here we are at home in little old New York ready to visit with our radio friends...". Dorothy was the famed Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Darothy Kilgallon and hubby D ick as Dick Kollmar, actor and Broadway Producer. The show was enormously popular with audiences and sponsors alike. It ran from 1945 til 1963.

BTW, another bit of nostalgia – Dick Kollmar was the actor who starred as Boston Blackie in the popular 1950 series of the same name.

How come I remember all this stuff and I still don’t feel old. There must be a lot of crap in this old mind of mine.

BTW, how absurd was that ruse by Fan Duel and the Gronk kick. FD pretending to be magnanimous Giving away $10 mil in credits to gamblers when the know those gamblers will pour in t back into their coffers in minutes.

Gamblng is one of the most serious addictions of all. It kills slowly,

The Boston Celtics just named the RI kid and former WVa Mountaineers player, Joe Mazzulla, full time coach of the Green. Unfortunately, Joe makes Bill Belichick look like a standup, slapstick comedian. Snap out of it, Joe.

Speaking of excitement, how about the prospects of Mike Pompeo being on that stage debating with Repub Prez candidates. Mike doesn’t mince words. What are the odds of him winning that debate? Oops!

The Answer:

Howard Carter is the famed archeologist who in 1923 discovered King Tut’s tomb. It was quite the discovery of the time yielding glittering treasures unseen since 1324BC. But Tut himself was an unremarkable Egyptian Pharoh as his importance seems mainly to descend from the fact that his tomb was discovered with so much loot. Carter began seeking Egyptian artifacts and info on its rich history in the Valley of the Kings at the age of 17. He worked in Egypt for half his life.

Have a happy day today E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y. I hope my grouchiness didn’t show through. Unlike Joe Mazzulla’s
