Special Places.

Today's Tids Issue 5,322

Mornings:

Many of the Richard Strauss tone poems sound like the beginning of a beautiful new day. Maybe that's why I like his music.

When a new funeral home opened across the street from another, it was stiff competition.

Headline that is not news, Department:

“PETA Outraged”

The Question:

In what year, and who founded “Jumble” puzzle? Bonus: What was Jackie Deshannon's biggest hit

The Headlines:

--Markets Open Higher; Nvidia Key Company to Report Earnings Tis Week; Margan Stanley Worries That People are Souring on Equities.

--Baby Killer Nurse K Lucy Letby in London Given Life without Parole; She Murdered 7 While another 8 Survived Her Attempts.

--Trump Will Not Participate in Repub Debate.

--Hillary Pases Through SoCal as Tropical Storm.

--Spain Beats England 1-0 for Women’s World Cup

One of my favorite places on earth is Black Island, Rhode Island. I have many special memories from there, times with great friends. It was a special place to be, but like many places discovered over time, it is too crowded now, and way too expensive and organized

How come I have no desire to go back to Las Vegas considering it is billed as having every little thing that modern humans crave. Yet in life I have found far better outlets for my cravings, places of natural beauty and serenity that could never be created by humans.

Victor Hovland has had some disappointing Sundays and Saturdays this year, but yesterday in the ever-important BMW FedEx final he played the round of his life, maybe one the of the best final rounds ever. It was a thrill to watch. By the way, I love that BMW which is like watching three tournaments in one – for the win, to make Atlanta, to get the best ranking for Atlanta. Love it.

I see that the FTC is contemplating establishing a fine system for those who misuse web site “Product Reviews.” One Company was fined many millions for only publishing positive reviews, while they methodically buried an equally large percentage of all reviews that were negative. The idea behind this thinking is getting a leg up in the advent of ubiquitous AI which is capable of creating mountains of believable misinformation. I expect that any fine program will exempt Politician’s exaggerations and mistruths. That’s just the way it works, right?

The newspaper photog asked the picketing workers to Strike a pose. (Thanks to Hoyt and Knurek)

For months now we have been deluged by news about and interviews with the 12, and formerly more, Dem candidates for my Congress person. It was all about give-away this and that, and identity this and that, and spend, spend like we really have it. One dem named Casey made a little sense. And finally, on Saturday morning we saw interviews with two Repub candidates, Local Town counsel woman Terri Flynn and ex-Marine John Leonard. And guess what, they weren’t wild eyed nuts but two people who seemed able to understand to grasp the needs of all people. Who were appalled at gratuitous spending with no measurable ROI. Who sounded rational and were greatly concerned by budgets out of control, and certainly all for returning Personal responsibility to our culture. I’ll vote for one of them and will be one of 37 other Repubs in this bluest of blue states. We probably don’t have a chance, but we have to let them know we are still here.

One weekend many years ago my friend and I were at a bar on Block Island. Our wives had gone to the mainland for some reason. We met a young couple there for vacation and my ever-inquisitive friend asked them what they thought of the island. The guy said, “it would be really great if they had an amusement park!” Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

The Answer:

Jumble was founded in 1954 for By Martin Naydel. He ran it until  1962 when it was taken over by Bob Lee who ran it for 30 years until 2013. Since then, it has been David Hoyt and Jeff Knurek. Btw, the original name for the punny puzzler was Scramble. Bonus: Jackie Deshannon made it big in 1969 with “Put a little live in your heart.” That was what put her in the minds of music lovers, but she was highly regarded, and better known among her peers as an innovative songwriter for many, including a favorite of mine “Bette Davis Eyes”.

Hey... why not. Put a little love in your heart:
