There is always a new generation.

Today's Tids Issue 5,072

Idea Inspiration:

Happy January E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!! It’s a crazy month sometimes, Not knowing whether to chill us to the depth of our bones or surprise with a warming springlike day. But a moth always important to those I know with birthdays that will say regardless of weather, “I’m starting another beautiful new day of life.” It’s a sad month for NFL fans as the games become a precious few. People celebrate MLK Day while his sensible mantra of judging “people by their Caracter ad not the color of their skin,” seems to have gone astray. But mainly good ole’ January is about getting another year off to a good start. But let’s hope we don’t forget what was great about last year, and little things we remember as special, and little things upon which we can build and improve. Me? I’m giving up typos for Lent.

It was quiet around here Friday night, NYE. I live in the heart of this small city and many of the parking lots, normally packed on weekends nan YE’s past, had but one or two cars. And there were far fewer bodies crumpled in stupors by the side of the road. Two so-called super competitive NCAA Championship games yesterday turned out to be lopsided stinkers and now we have just the SEC to look at. But despite the shortcomings of traditional goodness and badness for this transformative night, we still said Happy New Year to those we love so much, and we still had all of those good time memories of the year before to carry us through.

This will be the week that is for the stock market forecasters.

Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood. –Helen Keller

Tired, overworked librarians are generally out of sorts.

An opinions page column on Saturday was titled “10 good things Joe Biden accomplished this year.” Of course, that made me sit up quickly… he did ten good things?

Over the years, I have tried not to be hostile to the world’s newer ideas no matter how wacky they may sound to nostalgic ears. No matter how much I would prefer comfortable sameness. There are always better ways to do things, but all that is new is not always better. But, crypto currency is stretching my ability to be flexible beyond my liberated powers of understanding.

But, if you think about it, it is a natural evolution to a global currency on a globalized planet. So, maybe it is only globalization I’m resisting. Personally, don’t like to get too far beyond the grass roots of my town.

U Cincinnati is a pretty good football team. But what I saw in that much awaited game between a lesser league champion and the recent kingpin of the big five leagues was that the overall difference is the size and speed of the bigger league teams and not necessarily in the skill sets.

I still don’t get why somebody thought it a good idea to play two of the three most important college football games of the years on New Year’s Eve.

Greta Thunburg and Mel Gibson were both born on the same day, January 3. Now if there ever was an odd couple, that would be it.

When I listen to Sebelius I feel like I am in Finland. Which is ok with me because I’m tired of these halfhearted cold days we are having.

The billionaire founder of Best Buy, has discovered Aguilla the special tropic hide-away of the quiet wealthy. His idea is to provide more flights and ferry traffic to island… and to build a Disney like water park. Yikes. I think the quiet wealthy may take a walk.

Have you noticed how many teams in the NFL are now going for it on fourth down, and how many are opting to go for the 2-point conversion? Maybe it is directly proportional to the lower average age of coaches.

I think I’m a day ahead of myself, because Friday felt like Saturday and Saturday was like Sunday. I fact, I kept looking at calendars to see where I was.

When you get older, a rational new year’s resolution is staying alive.

I generally have pretty good will power, but I just can’t resist French fries.

China just forced a third Hong Kong news organization out of business. Hit they were expounding independent thoughts. Just in case you are wondering why a lot of people appear strongly against any inkling of communism in the USA.

The biggest fear of Omicron is that it overwhelms the hospitals to the point where you can’t get in if you have a medical emergency.

I don’t think about dying. it’s the last thing I want to do.

As you know, from time to time the Tids-Resting-Beyond-the-Strife Team of Editors determine the average age of random obit pages in the largest statewide newspaper here. On Sunday the average age for 22 Obits was 75.55. There was one low 52, but that was countered by two at 102 ad 103. Lately there have been way more deaths in the 70’s ad late 60’s which have been tipping the scale lower. Is it Covid, or it could it be because the Boomers, the largest segment of people ever in society are all in the older demographic now and are feeling the effects of deafening 60’s and 70’s rock music, tear gas from 60’s protests and creeping debilitation from pot? However, today the average of 10 obits weas 88 giving us a two-day average of 79.5. Oh, well. I’ll still find an excuse for living beyond the math.

The Answer:

Of course, “Tennessee Waltz” is probably number one in everybody’s hearts. I believe it is the tune where first the benefits of slow dancing! Next was for sure “How Much is that doggie in the window”. And another I remember well is, “Old Cape Cod”. There was “Mockingbird Hill” and “Changing Partners”. Some others were “Cross over the Bridge”, “You Belong to Me” and “Would I Love you”. Bonus: The First Paul/Ford tune that comes to mind is “How High the Moon”. (Or about a cow on the Empire State Building, How high the Moo?) Also we have “Via Co Dios” (May God be with You), “The World is Waiting for the Sunrise”, “Tiger Rag”, and “Bye Bye Blues”. Les Paul changed music forever with his electric interpretations, setting the standard for today’s innovators.

I heard about a horrible river dragon that lurked in the waters under the old London Bridge and destroyed passing boats, eating the crews and passengers. Finally, a group of brave knights lured it up onto the banks and, with great loss of life, managed to slay the horrible beast. While after the conquest, Sir Newt suggested that they grind up the foul beast and use it for food in the local orphanage to cut down on the wasteful cost of gruel. Thus Dicken's opening line..."It was the beast of Thames, it was the wurst of Thames."
