Today's Tids Issue 4,991

And the Bell Tolls:

I can’t describe in mere words the pathos better than scenes we all witnessed, still seared into our minds; the planes crashing into to the NYC towers and the Pentagon, and the once obscure field in Pennsylvania. The bleakness. The bodies falling in air, the buildings on fire, crumbling to the ground. The Clouds of smoke shrouding the death all around, The responders brave. The passengers on 93: “Let’s roll”. They said, “Let’s Roll<” and they did. Let this day never cease being a solemn remembrace of human loss and human cruelty. A constant reminder. We are vulnerable. Never give in to apathy, lest we temper our readiness.  It is a day to always renew our profound sense of Unity. That being together we survive. As one we are strong. America strong.

Now that Joe B has mandated vaccinations for all companies 100 employees and above, how many companies will be laying off or designating people as independent contractors to reach a safe number like 98.

Last night’s NFL opener lived up to its billing. And in the end, despite the heroics of Dak Prescott and his teammates, the GOAT did his GOAT thing all over again.

Can taxpayers get refunds for buying into bad government?

The Question:

Name five characters from the Blonde comic strip. Bonus: What did London England’s George Smith do in 1897 that made history?

"Numerous civilians in all stairwells, numerous burn victims are coming down. We're trying to send them down first ... We're still heading up." — Patrick "Paddy" Brown, New York City Fire Department Captain

Interestingly, the nurses of RI have been all over our Gov for mandating vaccinations for health care workers. Now it doesn’t matter because Joe B did the same thing yesterday on a broader scale. You can’t win.

I know some people who won’t be watching TV Saturday, lest the memories return more painful than before.

“What separates us from the animals, what separates us from the chaos, is our ability to mourn people we have never met.” –David Levithan

It may be a good idea to put off buying stuff you can do without until the supply chains start filling up again, Why pay more if you really don’t need something?

There is no such thing as Government Funded. It is Taxpayer funded.

I would not feel comfortable in a restaurant where the place mats describe proper application of the Heimlich maneuver.

Some people don’t eat in restaurants with paper placemats.

I know several personal stories of friends who had children who would normally have been in the most devastated parts of the twin towers that day, but somehow fate intervened. If it hurst my heart just typing that, I can’t imagine the feelings of horror and gratitude they have felt all these years.

"Why am I here? What is the reason I was saved? They're really unanswerable questions. After going through something like we did, all you can do is try to live your best life from day to day and move forward with gratitude." — Brian Clark, World Trade Center survivor

Somehow, I don’t feel funny today.

I joke around a lot about some of these oddball National Holidays, like today’s National TV Diner Day. But also today, there are two that are really worth taking seriously: “Stand up to Cancer Day”, and World Suicide Prevention day.

I remember every minute of that horrendous day 20 years ago tomorrow, the sunshine or the morn and the ocean’s roar. And the confusion. And then the sudden udder panic of the voice on TV. “Oh my God, a second place just crashed into the other building.” I saw it too, in disbelief. We were getting ready to drive with the family to Rockland Maine. Something amazing and beautiful to all of us happened as we co got off the interstate and turned north onto US Route 1. At once we saw pulled out to the road sides sign after sign after sign, “God Bles America”. That’s what the signs said, every one of them for 70 straight miles, “Gd Bess America,” God bless damned good ole’ beautiful America.

The Answer:

Of course, there is Dagwood and Blonde Bumstead. Thye first had a son named Alexandre (“Baby Dumpling” when born) and their daughter Cookie. There is the rascally boss Mr. Julius Dithers and his wife Cora. The neighbors are Herb and Tootsie Woodley. The ever-present mailman is Mr. Beasley. Tootsie is Blondie’s partner in a small catering biz they own. And then there is the dog Daisy and the boy Elmo always bothering Dagwood. Originally, Blondie Boopadoop was a flighty flapper and Dagwood Bumstead was the bumbling playboy son of a millionaire industrialist. The two were married, and Dagwood was promptly disinherited from the family fortune. Bonus: London taxi driver George Smith became the first person arrested for drunken driving after slamming his cab into a building. He later pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.

Choosing paths

Which way to go?

Is it me, or fate

That makes it so.

“America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination, and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.” — Former President Harry S. Truman
