Politics is applesauce –WR

Today's Tids Issue 5,245

Ha-Ha's on Capitol Hill:

“There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves.” --Will Rogers. Will and Wiley Post died in a plane crash 87 years ago today. I really liked Will Rogers. I always wanted to grow up to be like him. But I didn't know how to twirl a lariat and I wasn’t funny.

McDonald's must know more than our state department because they are reopening stores in Ukraine, saying normalcy has returned.

I really love the first movement of the Saint Sans’ 3rd piano concerto.

I think there is great transparency on our politics. I think that 99% of the time you can see right through any politician.

One of the headlines covering the big spending bill just passed reads, “The biggest investment so far in climate change.” It actually makes me chuckle. Like humans can actually change the climate which for over 100 million years the climate has been changing all by itself.

One reason there may be a soft landing or perhaps no recession at all is because of something called Normalization of consumer spending. That means consumers are used to buying stuff. Buying is like sleeping for many. And they will find a way to feed the addiction. Regardless of painting the economy black there is tons of money still floating around with a lot more people have way more than they can possibly spend.

“The only difference between death and taxes is that death doesn't get worse every time Congress meets.” --WR

The Question:

Who was Joe Fortenberry?

The Headlines:

--Markets Open Lower; China Central Bank Cuts Key Interest Rate; China Economic Reports Off.

--William Ruto Wins Kenya’s Presidential Election.

--Iran Media Calls Rushdie Stabbing “Divine Retribution”; World Leaders Dismiss Iran's Justification of Bloody Attack On Rushdie.

--Judge Orders Graham To Testify In Georgia Election Probe.

--Three People Injured In Another Mass Shooting, This Time At Six Flags Park Near Chicago; This Was Latest Of Several New Shootings At Public Places Over The Weekend.

Speaking of the new spending bill, University of Pennsylvania’s venerable Wharton Budget Model has this to say about the so-called “Inflation Reduction Act”, “The impact on inflation is statistically indistinguishable from Zero.” Now that phrase just made me smile immediately.

I actually miss the TV comedy “Fresh off the Boat” with the wonderful funny stars Constance Wu and Randall Park, and of course Grandma and the terrific kids. It was just one of those funny shows where I started with a smile on my face and waited for laugh after laugh.

All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that's an alibi for my ignorance. --WR

Last Saturday was “National Remove a Tattoo Day”. Thank God!

Most Celeb apologies are written by professional public relations teams, pure and simple. That's unfortunate for the celebs who actually have a heart, in a world of cynics' like me.

Say it isn’t so Joe Lapchick! The NIT which used to be the end-all college basketball prize before March Madness, is moving from its birthplace Madison Square Garden to Ls Vegas. Yeah, there’s a lot of Tradition in Las Vegas.

I have heard there is a big hacker’s convention currently in LV. It’s apparently a pretty serious gathering of smart people who hack for good reasons. But you have to wonder if casino owners like the idea of of hackers in hotel rooms, if you get my drift.

Electric cars run on natural gas, oil and coal. Do we think those s charges get their energy from the fingers of Zeus? (Note: 66% of electrical power generation is from fossil fuels.)

We’re on this earth for a spell. Get all the good laughs you can.” --WR

So, this Inflation Reduction Act is supposed to ramp up production and purchase of EVs and it will. But that increases the need for more to rethink the efficiencies of nuke energy. There are no panaceas without compromise.

“The more you observe politics, the more you've got to admit that each party is worse than the other.” --WR

The USA Flag was first raised in in California in 1846. Some days it appears its waving grandly may be coming to an end out there/

Yesterday's FedEx Championship Playoff was one of the craziest I have ever seen. But the good news, Will Zalatoris after many 2nd place finishes in major tournaments, one. The bad news, another good up and coming golfer Sepp Straka who battelled Will nose to nose, had to lose.

“Do the best you can and never take life too serious.” --Will Rogers

The Answer:

In 1936, the USA won the first Gold Medal for Basketball, crushing Canada 19-8. The game was played in the rain on a muddy basketball court. Joe Fortenberry was the MVP and leading scorer with 7 points. Sometimes we forget our heroes.

“Never let yesterday use up too much of today.” --WR
