The Vote.

Today's Tids Issue 5,364

The escalation:

Jim Jordan is saying all the right things on the eve of the vote to name him Speaker. But politicians always do that. So, I will believe it when I see it.

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it and then misapplying the wrong remedies. And then promising to fix it if elected.

Can I use the word “Crush"? It certainly wasn't retail sales edge by expectations for September. No, the consumer crushed it, and the economy is humming along despite outrageously higher prices.  And it appears that earlier this his morning apparent good news crushed Wall Steet too. Yes, the Scary Fed once again looms large just in time for Halloween

The Question:

What was Grace Kelly's Oscar winning role and name four of her other excellent movies.

The Headlines:

--Gaza in Total Collapse Mode; Biden Heads to Israel; 500 Killed After Israel Air Strike on Gaza City Hospital; Abbas Cancels Biden Meeting after Hospital Strike.

--Jordan not even Close After four Votes.

--Wall Stret Floating as Mood of Consumer Brightens; Street Zigzagging, Confused; Key Earning Today from Goldman, BoA, Lockheed Martin, UAL and J&J.

--India Supreme Court upholds Rights of LGBTQ Rights.

--New Facts lead Prosecutors to Open Case to seek New Charges Against Alec Baldwin.

A lot of technology is needed to make a house work well. Most people just live in them and take things for granted. Actually, a lot of people live in America. And take things for granted.

Actually, a lot of people just take things.

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

Last week the National sports media anointed San Fran and The Eagles as unstoppable in the NFL This week's headline was, “Is anybody good.” How quickly the experts roll over.

I walked into a service department this morning and the woman in charge actually recognized me and knew exactly why I was there before I ever said a word. How refreshing. And the service took far less time than estimated. It's too bad we only hear the opinions of the negative minded

Germany is now advising people to stock up on cheese and sausages. This is called the Wurst Käse scenario.

A lot of brides are finding in this year of rainy weekends that weather may spoilt the perfection of fairytale dream weddings but the love is just as strong when skies are grey. Maybe stronger

New York and Massachusetts and other states with “Right to Shelter” laws are scrambling to reverse their open arms legislation, so it only applies to homeless citizens of the various states. Collateral damage is often the result of magnanimous law making.  BTW, Mass liberal Governor Healey is blaming the Fed for opening the borders to illegal immigrants who are now rushing to take advantage of the Commonwealth largess laws.

“A liberal is just a conservative that hasn't been mugged yet.” Governor Maura Healy is getting mugged right now.

Some of the most talented people in the world aren't sitting at Mahagony desks in a 51st floor corner offices. They are in your basement fixing your plumbing.

I956 was the year Elvis had his first great hit, “Heartbreak Hotel”. If he had waited a year or two it would have been Hertbreak Motel as Ike signed the bill that gave us the Interstate Highway System, 41 thousand miles of new roads. He said it was great for national security. And then many a young lad felt insecure and that old Heartbreak thing when Grace Kelly married Prince RanierAfter 43 knockouts in 49 fights, the great Rocky Marciano retired undefeated, and Bus Segregation in Alabama was declared unconstitutional. On the frivolous side, “As te World Turns” began on TV, and on the destiny side, IBM invented the truly amazing hard disc with 5 megs of storage. “The Price is Right” began and it is still a popular daytime diversion and now finding bigger audiences pn Nighttime TV. Wow -- 1 in 3 kids are now going to college, and life got better with disposable diapers and non-stick frying pans. Aluminum sided Formica kitchen tables are becoming status symbols. And the almost nearly automatic Ringer Washer was introducedThe average cost of a house was $11,799 but you could get a nice modern home in Mansfield Ohio for about $7,600. My Fair Lady opened on Broadway and took America by storm, though many wondered why they chose non singing Rex Harrison for Higgens in a musical. The huge moive of the Year was The Ten Commandments. Other popular films were Guys and Dolls, The King and I, Around the world in Eighty Days and High Society shot right here in Newport. It is the changing of the guard as Presley had the Top two as Heartbreak was also joined by “Don’t Be Cruel”. His third top ten hit was Hound Dog at #6, He had to more in the top 20. Others up there in 56 were My Prayer by the Platters, The Wayward Wind by Gogi Grant, No Not Much by the Four Aces and Lisbon Antigua by Nelson Riddle. At college, Physics was killing me, but I was making progress on the gridiron. And in barsI found hazing to be much ado about nothing and I learned how to make a great fraternity paddle. I still have it in a closet, so if a thief breaks in, I'll grab it and yell, “Bend over!” That should work.

I had a good friend from Philadelphia who grew up with Grace Kelley who lived next door. He said she was a great neighbor and playmate.

Was Gogi Grant the mother of Lady Gaga?

The worst part about working for the department of unemployment is when you get fired you still have to show up the next day.

The Answer:

Grace won an Oscar for The Country Girl, opposite Bing Crosby. Her other great movies were: To Catch a Thief, High Noon, Rear Window, Dial M for Murder and High Society.

Here’s a song from High Society, a duet with Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby. It always ot end with a little love in a cruel. cruel world. Just an old fashioned 1950’s love scene. Probably looks mushily schmalzy to people today.
