Glimmering seas.

Today's Tids Issue 5,401

Glistening Skies:

“Everywhere is walking distance if you’ve got the time.” --Steven Wright.

Now there is a movement among some Repubs to get rid of the annoying Gaetz. But I'm thinking, don't these politicians understand why America is different than third world countries. We accept the votes of the people. Remember the people, in this land of the people, for the people, etc. Yeah, in America we aits until the next election. And maybe the congress gets something done other than trashing their own. O Of course, Gaetz is a prime example of not understanding the wishes of the people. But he deserves to finish his term because he was elected by the people. But I would look the other way if they hid him in a dark closet somewhere.

The cost of the 12 days of Christmas gifts is up to $46,730. The rising cost of suddenly rare Turtle Doves is a big contributor to the increase. But that was somewhat balanced now by the Lords a Leaping which are about a dime a dozen these days.

It’s always good to start anything with a laugh. And even better to finish anything with a laugh.

I'm basically an environmentalist. But I dislike intensely “Environmentalists”.

The Question:

What are the dates of origin of the six major current world marathon races? Bonus: What is the meaning if the commonly used new era phrase. “Ghosting”?

There are an awful lot of preachers on TV and across the web these days. The only difference is that they don’t dress the part anymore. And they use a different kind of bible.

Dallas looked like the best NFL team in America last night. This sets up a look-ahead game between them and San Fran.

Spell-Check has absolutely no clue that the word “They” exists as an option for any misspelling.

In 1981 52 Americans breathed once again the air of freedom after spending 444 days in captivity in Iran. It was a day America smiled. Ronald Reagan was inaugurated and became an active president at once, trying to minimize government interjection into lives, and find ways to be practical and rational. He fired the striking Air Traffic Controllers to get airlines back from chaos. He nominated the first woman to the Supreme Couter – Sandra Day O’Conner. Things were looki ng brighter unless you were buying and selling a house with enormous mortgage rates. As I was. I had two houses for a while after getting a pleasant promotion to a publishing house in Pennsylvania. So, I really could feel America's Pain. Europe successfully began high Speed train service with the first run of the French TGV. The USA is still futzing around on that one. It was the first year in which the word 'Internet” was uttered. So, At least the US was on its way to high-speed virtual travel someday. IBM introduced the personal computer using the software of an unknown company -- Microsoft's MS-DOS. The world seemed captivated but the event that ca gave birth to a cultural cult when Lady Diane Spencer Married Prince Charles. And not necessarily with the same hysteria for the launching of the first space shuttle Columbia. Yet with all that, nothing was quite as exciting as Indiana Jones. The average salary was over $21k and we were all choking on gas at $1.25/gal. The Dow was still meandering around 875! And people were in love with vividly colored vinyl Bean Bag Chairs. Not me. While Indiana Jones sold lots of tickets, Chariots of Fire inspired imaginations and achievement. Also, popular at the theaters were Nine to Five, Arthur, For Your Eyes Only and the soft and pleasant, On Golden Pond. MTV debuted on TV and cable amazed people with its 133 channels. One of my favorite songs, “Bette Davis Eyes,” was the top Billboard song of 1981. Not far behind was the delightful “Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. Dolly Parton hit it big with 9 to 5. It was a good year overall. I learned how to drive on the other side of the road and navigating roundabouts as I took in the scenic wonders of England. We managed to meet families like ours just as concerned as us with big government and taxes. I was awed and humbled by a lot of cathedrals, especially knowing it took multiple generations to build them. time travelers from today's instant gratification society would have a breakdown.

“For most people, when you say you lost your khakis, you’ve lost your pants. But in Boston it means you can't start your car.”

Impeachments is no way to run a free country.

The Sweetback Sisters will be singing in Jamestown RI this Saturday. They are one of my favorite folk groups ever. Talented, and purely delightful entertainers. Just in case they ever come to your town, and you happen to like folk music.

Oops -- Error on Friday: it was Brook Shields who was in Blue Lagoon, not Anne Margaret. How could I ever confuse those two.

Hmmm, the buyers of Macy’s look like they will be subdividing eth properties for something other than selling Barbie outfits and Toasters. But that’s just my opinion.

So, did you hear about the overweight guy? Yeah, his doc gave him a diet; told him to Eat regularly for two days, skip a day and then repeat the process for two weeks. Two weeks later the Doc gets a call, “Hey Doc. I lost 20 pounds but I'm in a hospital. Those skipping rope days wore me out”.

If congress is going to investigate anybody, they should put all of their time investigating bureaucrats in US Federal agencies spending money not specifically authorized. The non-elected authorities in US government fiefdoms just may be our biggest problem.

The Answer:

Up ot the late 1960's when the Tokyo Marathon emerged as a big event, most marathons were either in the Olympics or Boston. Boston began in 1897. Then Tokyo and New York came along officially in 1970. Chicago streets felt the feet in 1978. London surfaced in 1981 and Berlin 1round 1984. The six major marathons that work together for point accumulation are Boston, Tokyo, New York, Chicago, London and Berlin. Bonus: Ghosting is that point in a relationship typically romantic when one person cuts off all contact without explanation. However, while ghosting became popular on dating sites and other digital communications in short and even long-term relationships, it is now a technique used in business contacts. It is especially annoying lately to human resource departments when a job applicant just disappears without warning

This is a nice song from 1081. I like any way:
