Dread or Delight

Today's Tids Issue 5,471

Optimism or Depression:

In Russia everybody knows it will be a stage-managed election. In the USA people will just sit there and stare into space wondering what went wrong.

A man with authority walks into a bar... He orders everyone a round.

Microsoft keeps on updating this system with things they think I am missing. What I am missing using Microsoft now is when it was easy and there was no cloud... or complicated upgrades to make my life easier.

Has anybody heard from or seen Malaena Trump?

The Question:

Here's question for the older than dirt crowd: What was the name of the successful male singer who was surprised and fired live on TV by Arthur Godfrey? Bonus: What does Schadenfreude mean?

The Headlines:

--Wholesale Prices Report (PPI – Producer Price Index) shows Significant Increase for Feb; Inflation Worries remain Sensitive; Market Shrugs Off Data Early to Open Higher.

--Former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin Putting Together Investors to Bu y TikTok; Says it is a great Company.

--World Expects No Suprises in Russia Presidential Election.

--New National Yahoo News/YouGov Poll Reports that of Seven Words asked to Describe feelings for upcoming election, “Dread” was by far Number One.

--Kansas and Missouri Expecting Storms with Baseball/Apple Size Hail.

Governments should only exist to protect the people's God given rights. I wonder if politicians know that.

I hit some golf balls yesterday. My body still seemed to work after the long winter months.

Here are the results of that Yahoo News/YouGov poll mentioned in the Headlines: Of seven words offered Dread, the most negative option, topped the list (40%), with exhaustion (29%) and depression (21%) making strong showings as well. Delight (8%) was in last place. In total, a majority of Americans (53%) chose at least one of the negative feelings (dread, exhaustion or depression), while just 40% picked at least one of the positive feelings (optimism, excitement or delight). The seventh word option was Neutral. The good news they say is the mood is a little brighter than September 2023 when delight was only 5%. Note also that while “Dread” hasn't changed since September, more are picking the word Optimistic with 40% of Repubs being optimistic versus 37 % of Dems. Dems also Indicated that they are less sure of a win than repubs -- D65% to R85%.

Despite legal problems in Europe and the US, analysts say not to give up on Apple. It is still a creative, innovative giant “with many tricks up its sleeve” including Generative AI and a happy, device owner group of over 2 billion. Apple People trust Apple to transition into the future better than the rest.

Happy Pi Day, Everybody. May infinity be with you.

Good ole’ Oracle is still a company well positioned for a strong future. Maybe it doesn't look as whiz-Bang as it did in its youth, but it is in all the right places.

Government regulations and mandates often passed in hysterical moments of tragedy-angst often create collateral damage by placing people and businesses in precarious financial dilemmas. In many cases it is too much to bear, producing real citizen pain unfelt by insensitive government monitors.

The Answer:

Julius LaRosa had just finished singing a song “Manhattan”, on the radio show following TV portion. Godfrey told him it was his “Swan Song”. “In 1952 Archie Bleyer (Godfrey's Orchestra Leaser) formed Cadence Records and had La Rosa recording for him. La Rosa then hired a manager after his first hit record. This didn't go over too well with Sir Arthur, since none of Arthur's friends were allowed managers. La Rosa also refused (unlike all the other male stars on the show) to take dance lessons ordered by Godfrey. On top of this all, La Rosa had a thing for Dorothy McGuire. Godfrey himself also had a soft spot for McGuire. Finally on Oct. 19, 1953, La Rosa was canned right after singing "Manhattan." Godfrey called it La Rosa's "swan song." “Godfrey's reason for firing La Rosa was his lack of humility. For many years later, La Rosa contemplated what Godfrey meant by saying he lacked humility. Most of the press and all of the audience sided with La Rosa. Godfrey's popularity took a dip and he never regained the admiration he once held(As perhaps the most powerful Manon Radio and TV). Bonus: “Schadenfreude” means “Feeling satisfaction or pleasure at someone else's misfortune.”

In case you don’t remember, the Godfrey “Friends” were " Frank Parker, Marianne Marlowe, Haelokie, Jeanette Davis, and the McGuire Sisters. Tony Marvin was the announcer, and Archie Bleyer was the orchestra leader. He got axed the same way as Julius two years later. It appears affable old Arthur had a cold heart.

Julius had dreams of being a Frank Sinatra or a Tony Bennett but in the end, he was just another decent singer how had a decent career post AG.
