Peaceful noise.

Today's Tids Issue 4,681

Silent and ready:

The fog horns were delightfully haunting this morning; beckoning me to adventures and discoveries across the sea.

I wonder if Columbus felt that way as he set sail only to find hysterical hyperbole.

If a single statistician meets another single statistician, does she datum or does he data. (Shoot me!)

The Korean conflict was an awful war. (What war isn’t?) Not unlike Viet Nam in many ways. Americans fighting out of their element on rugged terrain in freezing cold. While hordes of Chinese and North Koreans never stopped coming. M*A*S*H was a funny Korean War TV series, but there was nothing funny there, nothing at all. It began 70 years ago, and so few seem to remember. Maybe we need more statues.

It appears that Las Vegas odds makers have installed Kamala as the odds on favorite to be Joe’s mate. Kamala is at -113. The rest: Val Demings +600, Susan Rice +600, Elizabeth Warren +1000, Michelle O +2200. At +2500 we have Karen Bass, Keisha Lance Bottoms. Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Tammy Duckworth. Then it is Stacy Abrams +3000, The Hill +8000, Catherine Cortez Mastro, Gretchen Witmer, Tammy Baldwin, Andrew Cuomo and Tulsi Gabbard are all over +10000. Is that a pretty picture for the USA?

Missing: “Cooler Heads”? As in “Cooler heads will prevail”. The scary question of our times.

The Question:

Who was the first American golfer to win the US Open?

The Headlines:

--Banks Lead Stocks Significantly Downward; Bank Stress Report Puts New Restrictions On On Bank Dividends And Share Buybacks.

--Arizona, Florida And Texas Infections Continue To Soar. Texas Gov Stops Reopening Process; Companies Also Pushing. Back Reopening Dates.

--U Mich Consumer Sentiment Index Revised Lower To 78.9% After Virus Infections Grow.

--Lightening Strikes Kill Over 100 In Northern India.

--Supreme Court Approves Policy Tat Permits Easier Removal Of Immigrants at Border; Trump Admin Asks SC To Ax ACA.

--Gigantic Gas Tank Explosion Rocks Teheran.

Isn’t it interesting how the left who are for globalization and open borders are horrified at Christopher Columbus who’s only sin was trying to help Europe expand beyond its borders? Will they be horrified in the future by remembering digital explorers who brought us cultural diseases like twitter? Its all a bunch of pure and unadulterated BS.

Oldies But Punnies, Department:

(Tids word players bring back best of previously published puns)

--I wasn’t originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind.

--The Friars were behind in their belfry payments, so they opened a flower shop to earn money. Since the people loved the men of God, they were an instant success. A rival florist thought it was unfair. He asked them several times to find goodness in their hearts and shut down. They never did. So, he hired Hugh McTavish, the toughest most vicious thug in town to persuade them. He beat them and trashed their shop. Terrified, they closed. This proved that Hugh and only Hugh can prevent Florist Fryars.

It appears that if the Feds, State Governors and Industry chieftains want the best Covid safety plan, they should go immediately to the NBA playbook. Infectious disease experts say it is without question the best of all planes they have seen. You never know where you will find the next great idea.

Will there be an epidemic of failed academics due to the Pandemic has become systemic under the ivy. A lot of academics are wondering how many colleges will go under due to the nasty Covid. Endowment funds have been killed by falling stocks. In a new poll on the subject published in Forbes, over 50% of students said their family’s faineances have been hurt by the Pandemic. 20% of graduating HS seniors said in the same poll that it is unlikely or highly unlikely they will go to college as planned. Another 11% say they haven’t decided. Analysts in the field say that just a 10% reduction in enrollment will be devastating. Also in the survey, 50% of students said Online learning was worse than in in-room and 13% said it was much worse, Only 5% said it was better. The good news if there is any. Academics are happy that students now understand the value of of in-class learning. And for many college hopefuls it maybe a lot easier to get into top colleges. That is, if there is money left in endowments to buffer high tuition costs.

The fall will be interesting as some are predicting the probability many school closings.

Some days I just don’t know when to stop typing. It’s a bad habit. You can get into trouble just by adding a couple of extraneous words. Language is always open to interpretation. Se, I should have stopped this Tidlet at “stop typing”.

The Answer:

The first American to lift up the US Open Championship Trophy was John J. McDermott, in 1911.

Yes, it has always been comfortable knowing that the sensible great silent majority would always be there to come up strong to squash the noisier rants of a vocal minority. I’m a bit worried about that now. Just take a peek at who is being elected to Congress.

Rice is great if you are really hungry and want to eat 2000 of something. –MH
