Tightening the screws

Today's Tids Issue 4.666

But opening minds:

This looks to be a devil of an issue.

So, I’m guessing that after confronting a killer disease, lockdown, economic uncertainty and racial discrimination, Americans will become stronger. Nah. Most are still worried that their summer vacations could be ruined.

It is really bothering me that I hear some politicians trying to condone or enable the criminal actions of the past week – the stealing and destructive aggression, the killing of police. Yesterday the chief law enforcement officer in Massachusetts, AG Maura Healy said, “Yes, America is burning, but that’s how forests grow.” So now looters and arsonists and bullies with baseball bats are Environmentalists? Feeling safe yet?

“If desperate times breed desperate wordplay, we need to prepare for a pundemic.”

President George W. Bush says, “It remains a shocking failure that many African Americans, especially young African American Men, are harassed in their own country.”

A lot of politicians love it when Americans are living in fear.

The Question:

Name what are considered the most influential civilizations in world history. Bonus: Who was the very first astronaut to walk in space? Extra Bonus: What was the name of the French ocean liner that broke the transatlantic speed record in 1935?

The Headlines:

I don’t listen any more to criticism about Trump. Like em’ or hate em’, 100% criticism of a President has no credibility.

I did think that Biden had the best line yesterday, “I just wish he would open it (The Bible) once.”

Not that Joe is saintly, though he thinks he is holier than thou.

Trump says the GOP is pulling National Convention out of North Carolina. Is That the Death Knell To His campaign? Carolina is one of four tossup states and the only one where he leads Biden.

If Word autocorrected like texting, you would be unable to decipher Tids.

One thing I can’t unlearn is the pronunciation for “ei” or “ie”. I took German for many years and because of that my mind says “ei” is always sounding like “I” and “ie” is always “E”. Invariably Americans pronounce names and words just the opposite. But, strangely, I still rely on “I” before “E” etc, when trying to spell receive and believe. No wonder Americans need psychiatrists.

I live next to a nice city park, where protesting has been common going back to the days before they were protesting there against the British. Yesterday when walking through it I saw on a sidewalk a very nice professional chalk drawing of George Floyd. and I’m thinking, I hope the thugs in Boston don’t know about it. I awoke this morn to to find the neighborhood whole.

I remember over the years looking at TV news footage of Middle Eastern people burning and looting their own towns, burning American flags. And I was always thinking -- God, I’m glad I live in America where people are rational; choosing process over mob rule.

Former Civil Rights Activist and former head of the National Urban League Department of Criminal Justice Robert Woodson says that black progress has been stymied most by those with white guilt and successful blacks in leadership positions at institutions.  One of his books was, “The left forgets what Martin Luther King Stood For.” The Floyd murder focuses attention on a racial divide (Which Woodson thinks is more about Class than color). It is for sure a wakeup call. But there is more than one singular opinion about why a such a prominent problem hasn’t been solved after 50 years and $22 Trillion spent on poverty programs.

The Answer:

The 10 greatest civilizations are – Roman Empire (27BC to 1453 AD), Ancient Egypt (3150BC – 30BC), Greek Empire (800 BC – 600 AD), British Empire (1583 AD - Today), Chinese Empire (221 BC – 1912 AD), The United States (1776 – Present), Islamic Golden Age (750 AD – 1257 AD). Mongol Empire (1206 AD – 1368 AD), Persian Empire (550 BC – 651 AD) and Mayan Empire (2000 BC – 1540 AD). The Mayan was curiously different because it was isolated from most of those early Euro/Asian empires. Interestingly the Persian empire was noted for good morals, the opposite of their rivals the Greeks (Spartans). It was the largest of all previous empires created the concept of infrastructure and the basis for many inventions to come. Mongols were mor conquerors. Bonus: The first Astronaut to walk outside the space ship was Edward Higgins “Ed” White. Talk about the unknown! Extra Bonus: The Normandie was a ship for the times, fast and beautifully luxurious, but had a unceremonious ending. It crossed the Atlantic in an unheard of 4.14 days and remains the most powerful Steam Turbo-Electric passenger ship ever built. In 1942 it was seized by the US for use inn the war. During refitting in in NY Harbor it capsized and later was scrapped in 1946.

So, civilizations crumble over time. Do you think that smart phones can save this one?

I think I’ll just put an “Out of Order” sticker on my head and call it a day.
