Recapturing.

Today's Tids Issue 5,425

Long live the King:

No, I’m not starting this May Five edition of El Tidso with the old shaggy dog story of the sinking of the British Mayonnaise shipment to Mexico. I’ll just say happy May 5. You have to wonder though if in a hundred years if May 5 won’t be bigger than July 4.

While Cinco de Mayo represents a short-lived victory of the underdog Mexican army over Napoleon III and the French. it actually is celebrated more in the USA as it relates to a California activist Chicano Rights movement. In Mexico, its September 18, their Independence Day, that is celebrated across that nation. So, a couple of Mexican beer manufacturers Modella and Corona in the 1980’s made it all happen with huge ad campaign. It is celebrated with a parade in Pueblo Mexico where the battle took place. So that’s it. Cinco de Mayo is basically a beer promotion.

So, it seems lately that in some quarters around this USA of ours, Mount Rushmore represents the Satan in America? I'll take it as a patriotic monument, no question. Can those who think thye are new and refreshing get their point across by being positive not tearing down everything in their misguided path.

This girl today said she recognized me from the Vegetarians Club, but I'd swear I've never met herbivore.

The Question:

I’m feeling a little saxy today. Name the Top Ten all time Saxaphone players.

The Headlines:

--Stocks Soar at Opening; Investors Like Strong Jobs Market and a Series of Good Earnings Reports Form Key Companies.

You know how people not in the business have always wondered how the stocks of these Tech s startups always soared with barely a hint of revenue and no profits now or in the foreseeable future. It's because the banks that are having bankruptcy problems now supported them with high-risk loans and simultaneous bad risk management judgment.

So, here we are down to the nitty gritty of two big events, the Charles Coranation and the Kentucky Derby. Nobody does the big events better than the British. Maybe they should take over the Super Bowl half time show

Maybe the King/Queen of England idea is passe in the minds of some of today’s thinking, but to me in their system the monarchy sustains a comfort of continuity in the face of unpredictable politicians. It's something that the People can hold onto while the rest of the world goes insane. Everybody needs a hug.

What's with all of these TV commercials with the word Poop?

And by the way is there a more visually disconcerting, irritating commercial than the one with the chunky dad in a red Speedo bathing suit. Gag! It's turnoff the TV for me on that one.

Ok let's see how the odds may have changed now on the day before the race. Odds are that Tim Brady won’t be seen there with Gizelle. And he won’t be alone because she won’t be around to dress him up. So, the favorite is still Forte but now at 9-2 from 5-1. Two others are now at 5-1: Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire who have moved up a bit. Two Phils and Derma Sotogake are at 8-1. Kingsbarns is 12-1, and the others under 20-1 are Reincarnate, Mage and Confidence Game. Four horses have been scratched already, including a favorite earlier in the week, Practical Move.

Lists about anything “Best in History” are typically not too accurate because if they haven’t been mentioned on twitter they have no history.

The Answer:

Number one is Charlei Parker. Next is John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley, Harold Land, Maceo Parker, Cannonball Adderly, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and at #10, Vi Redd. Some popular names are down the list like, Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins at 17/18, Stan Getz is at 19, Johnny Hodges 22, and Gerry Mulligan at 33.

One of my favorite little British moments of pageantry is this film below of Queen Elzabeth's coronation. I think it sets the stage well for tomorrow.

Have a great weekend, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!
