Blessing Day #3.

Today's Tids Issue 4,784

Issue 4,784

I’m thankful, and want to send a resounding blessing to all the doctors who kept me alive despite my proclivity towards addictive compulsions. On the other hand, I feel obligated to offer a big thank you to the inventors -- of Cheetos, Diet Coke, ruffle style potato chips, Cheez-its, pretzels, flavored rice, salted caramel fudge ice cream and of course beef, chicken, turkey and pork gravy; assorted rich buttery sauces… all of which are key ingredients of my happy life. As long as there are doctors. It’s a good balance.

Seriously though, I do have one more blessing before tomorrow. It’s for all you folks. Whom put up with my ideas and typos and creative grammar solutions? To all of you who may or may not love my politics to humor or food choices or grouchiness, but keep on reading because you may have noticed that over the years you will always find at least one viable nugget a day. So, thanks for being you, attentive, appreciative and, critical. Thanks, and I wish you all a great Thanksgiving, Zooming or hugging. I wish you brightness during these days ahead that may seem cloudy. I love you all. God bless people, big and small right and left. We all got to live in this damn world somehow.

Why do chefs feel the need that they have to improve on lobster?

The Question:

What was served at the dinner celebrating the first great harvest. “Great” being relative to the times.

It’s pickin’ time. Last week we struggled a bit, but managed a somewhat respectable 9-5 record bringing the year to 110-49-1 (A dip below 70% to 69.2) With the postponement of the marquis T-Day night game between Pit and Balt, what’s left over are games between several turkeys. The four teams this afternoon, Houston at Detroit and Washington at Dallas have a combined record of 13-27. Oddly, as bad as they have been, Dallas and Washington are playing for first place in the weak NFC East. I pick Dallas. In the second game Houston may have hit their stride and I go with the Texans as to lasso the Lions. In addition to Balt-Pitt now scheduled for Sunday Night, the other key games for the weekend are Arizona-New England, Tenn-Indy, KC-TB, and perhaps Chicago and Green Bay. While Baltimore is in a must win position all of a sudden, I’m going Steelers, Pats, Titans, Chiefs and in the big rivalry game, the Pack over da Bears. Of the rest I go Vikings over Panthers, Browns to dazzle Jags, Bills solid against the Chargers, Dolphins to swin past the J-e-t-s, , Giants lookin’ large against the now depleted Bengals, Saints to maintain heavenly composure against Broncos, the all of a sudden mighty Rams to butt Niners and the Seahawks over the Eagles in an air duel.

Some of you may have forgotten that one of the original stated purposes of the Tids was to help the esteem of people who are often forced to feel guilt from the intimidating glances of health-oriented people. I want snackers and those actually enjoy good food to feel contented and live happily with their all of their bad food habits. You know, life is a balance.

You know the old joke: Those who exercise and eat properly will just die healthy.

There’s a lot of rewriting of the history of America these days. The latest is about the first Thanksgiving and the relationship between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribes. I guess the rewrite idea is to cripple the beliefs of many Americans, proud of their country. I’ll just continue believing in America the beautiful, and our amazing past that has given so much to so many. I think we’re doing ok despite the attempt of others to divide us. I don’t feel guilty about anything.

People who are too politically saturated often miss a lot of what is going on be around them

Some of you may not have understood the meaning of the “Pope’s Nose” from yesterday’s Tids: “The fleshy protuberance at the posterior end of a dressed fowl, especially the tailpiece of a roasted chicken or turkey”. To many, this crispy, fatty end part of the fowl is a Thanksgiving Day dinner prize.

As I read quotes of the opposition, I guess the Dem I dislike and distrust most is Adam Schiff. At least AOC and progressive pals believe in what they are saying.

A turkey tenderloin looks like turkey breast to me. I don’t know what this big commotion is all about.

You may have noticed over the years that I’m not big on commotions.

The Answer:

There are a lot of opinions about what was served., I think most agree that was wild fowl and venison. We are also sure corn in some form was served, probably more as a grain for bread or porridge.  Writings from Edward Winslow, who was there, confirm that fowl and venison was served, and also that there were about 90 Wampanoags at the feast bringing maize. Turkey may have been the fowl but according to archeologists it is more likely it was Goose or Duck and perhaps Swan and smaller birds like Pigeons. In addition to the fowl it is most likely they ate eels, lobster, clams and mussels. Also, other smoked fish were served. There were also chestnuts, walnuts and beechnuts. Green beans and squashes, including pumpkins were certainly part of it all. Dg igging up old garden areas showed that Pilgrims cultivated turnips, carrots, onions and garlic. It was fifty years before boiling cranberries was discovered, and potatoes white and sweet came from Brazil and Caribbean after the first thanksgiving. There were no pies because Pilgrims did not have butter or wheat flour.

Happy Thanksgiving, E-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y!!

I have always liked the Navy Hymn as music for Thanksgiving.
