Mired in pettiness.

Today's Tids Issue 4,778

Substance?:

As I read newspapers and listen to boldly pronounced headlines, what I see basically is that what is portrayed as news is mainly bickering. Bickering: Arguing about petty and trivial matters.

With the binds that Covid has placed upon the sports world, I find myself now enjoying reading about things like High School Cross Country or tennis championships. The heart of the athlete, the pride in the accomplishment and the devotion to team -- it’s all still in their just as it might be in some big TV pro extravaganza, maybe better – the smiles of victors, the hugs between teammates

Too many people seem to think that Covid is forcing them to give up something when it is absolutely an opportunity to discover something new.

Michael J. Fox: “I’m going to marry a Jewish woman because I like the idea of getting up Sunday morning and going to a deli,”

The Question:

What is the name of the SpaceX capsule?

The Headlines:

--Space X Capsule With 4 Astronauts Successfully Locks Into Space Station.

--US Markets To Follow EU Momentum Slowdown Following Moderna News; Pull Back At Tuesday Opening Following Huge Monday Up Tick Continues Into Late Morning; New Retail Sales And Manufacturing Reports Expected to Beat Estimates

--Buffett Loads Up on Pfizer And Other Big Pharma; Tesla Added To S&P Listings.

--Biden To Begin National Security Briefings With Outside The Government Experts As Transition Opportunities Remain Closed.

One thing about this economy and looking the future: financial analysts have little history to guide them on determining detrimental effects of a disease on an economy. This is a disease that forced large companies, privately owned small businesses and individuals to look long and hard at the traditional considerations of doing business. So many adjustments have been made to work within this new framework, that the future for employment could decline significantly, and many businesses that didn’t make it will not return. Worse, the level of global purchasing pawer that is integral to strong economy may have diminished more than it appears on the surface. The promise of a vaccine a has provided a moment of hope for light at the end of the tunnel. But what we will find anew at the end of that tunnel is the real question.

Irma Bombeck observed that “giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. It is after that, she says, “that the mother is born”. I thought that was pretty profound. The most beautiful persons I have ever seen are new mothers.

Last night, The Voice “Battles” were entertaining, but what really got me was the duet between 14 year old Carter Rubin and 15 year old Larriah Jackson. They sang with perfect voices and beautiful emotions John Legend’s song, “Like I’m gonna lose you”. A tough song to sing, but be tougher for two young teens to remain poised singing it front of Legend, himself. It was a treat. Judge Stefani picked Crater, but also “Saved” Larriah. The five top-rated singers last night according to a small fans sample were Marisa Corvo, Ryan Gallagher, Larriah Jackson, Ian Flanagan and a tie between Carter Rubin and James Pyle.

Listening to and reading about the high school athletes and other talented young people lets me have the confidence that our future will be based on a lot more substance than you might sense from reading headlines and opinion pieces. Kids today are a lot further ahead than where I was years ago. Hopefully, I still have a small edge in experience.

Robert Orben: “Every morning I get up and look though the Forbes list of the richest people in America. If I’m not there, I go to work.”

Too many news people these days seem more like gossip columnists.

The Answer:

The SpaceX capsule is named Dragon. I only wrote this question to remind myself of that. Too many important accomplishments these days are lost in the constant national bickering.

Irma Bombeck: Never go to a doctor whose office plants have died.”
