Just staying healthy

Today's Tids Issue 4,777

An apple a day?:

If anything during this increasing Covid season I’m go to try to get outside as much as possible, walk everywhere. We have a nice little mathematical correlation going on here. Covid increases dramatically in winter as tourism declines rapidly making it very safe to walk the streets.

Strange bedfellows, Department:

A Republican Senate maybe best friend Joe Biden could have as “it would insulate him from the looniness of the Dem progressives.” The best pals nobody ever knew about: Joe Biden and Mitch McConnell.

I took the shell off my racing snail thinking it would make him faster. If anything, it made him more sluggish.

It’s time to get on with the transition. That’s what America is all about. Just because Dems in 2016 went out of their way not to respect a new president when Trump won, doesn’t mean Repubs have to be loutish too.

The Question:

Opera Sense has listed the Ten Most Famous arias in the world. How many can you name? Or you can just send in recordings of you humming.

The Headlines:

--Dow Hits New Record High After Modena Announces Upbeat Vaccine Data.

--After Covid And Restoring Economy, China Cold War Could Be Biggest Challenge For New Admin.

--Iota To Become Season’s First Cat Five; Nearing Nicaragua, Central America.

--Trump Refusing To Concede; Trump NSA O’Brien Says It Appears Biden Has Won.

--Four Lawsuits Designed to Disrupt Biden’s Win Are Withdrawn.

Golfer: “This is the worst golf course I’ve ever played on.”

Caddie: “Sir, this isn’t the golf course. We left that an hour ago.”

I never liked Barak Obama. And his new book tour interviews continue to reinforce that.

For all those Repubs disheartened a little by the election, I have to say I’m quite happy that voters seem to be getting it, saying with their votes that government will be better without expanding the progressive movement so overpublicized by the media outpouring for AOC and “The Squad”.

Part of the fun of writing this Tids mess is making observations about everyday people doing things they do every day. But if everybody is quarantined, I won’t have any people to observe for their foibles.

One of the great advantages of cold weather is that you generally can go to beautiful places without the crowds. There is a lot to be said about a little nip in the air.

The latest on Biden-Trump from an observer in the China hierarchy: “I impressed that two men in their 70’s can maintain an election for so long.”

You know you’re having a bad golf day when you lose two golf balls in the ball washer.

America worked better when ex-Presidents receded into the woodwork.

Dustin Johnson is the king of golf right now. No question. But, I wrote a lot last week about the emotions of NASCAR drivers, and t yesterday we saw it from the unflappable, almost at times cocky Dustin. First it was the tears rolling down the face of his caddy.  Then the record setting winner stepped to the microphone. A simple question from the presentation announcer, and an answer that never came. Yet maybe it did come out loud and clear in the silence, the silence of a super athlete caught in the moment. How better to say this is the proudest day in my life than with tears.

The easiest shot in golf is your fourth putt.

The Answer:

# 1 is La donna e mobile from Verdi’s Rigoletto. Nice with Pavarotti singing. 2. is Der Holle Rache from Mozart’s De Zauberflote (Queen of the Night from Magic Flute). Next is “O mio bambino cara” from Puccini’s Giannia Schicchi and is followed by Casa Diva from Bellini’s Norma, Nessum Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot, Largo al Factotum From Rossini’s Barber of Seville, Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, Musettas Waltz for Pucinni’s La Boheme, Non piu and Andrai from Mozart’s La Nozzi di Figaro and at 10 – Toreador song from Carmen,

Point of no return: The final ace in a tennis match.

Here is an aria not listed as one of the top ten, but most people enjoy it. I remember this well. One day my landlord, a nice older guy with a good family, who worked in the factories of Pittsburgh; hard and honestly, I’m sure, came to my house his face aglow. He proudly showed me his new record album of Madam Butterfly. He then played Un Bel Di Vedremo. He transported to another world. I could see it in his smile. I never forgot the beauty of that moment and the pure happiness in a man.
