Injecting a little Football.

Today's Tids Issue 4,833

Blitzing Covid:

I’m beginning to sat thinking seriously about the super Bowl.

Liz Cheney voted her conscience. Isn’t it nice for a change to have somebody vote their conscience instead of in lockstep? Her fellow congress people didn’t elect her. She is a congressional product of the people back home. That’s the way it works. Hence, they are called “representatives”. I was happy to see that she was supported for her current Congressional leadership post (#3 Repub in House) with a Repub congressperson vote 145 to 61.

I have always enjoyed Vangelis. Especially on a pretty day like today.

The bigger picture says that “the economy remains resilient in the face of the pandemic.” That’s a good way to say we aren’t back yet but the body is still breathing smoothly and not terminal. Jobs are being added, and the mood is generally pretty good. Of course, the people in the travel, entertainment and restaurant industries are still flattened by government restrictions. And they deserve more attention than any segment of the economy. But, overall, we are forging ahead, and keeping the “R” word at bay.

The Question:

Who Founded St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center in Memphis?  Bonus: Did you know that now there are 5 Covid vaccines? There are. Name them.

The Headlines:

--All Tree Major Indices Up; New Jobless Claims Dip Below * 800K to 779K.

--Repubs Say OK To Liz, and Move Away form Marjorie Taylor Greene Actions; “In Major Partisan Power Grab” Dems Want To Remove Her From Repub Committee Positions.

Hey! There’s a football game on tap this weekend. And, it should be a good one. While we have two shiny, shiny QB’s, people really looking at the game beyond the glitz are saying that Tampa Bay’s defense may be the key to the game. KC’s D master, Steve Spagnuolo has been known to have throttled Tom Brady in the past. Brady reads blitzes well but he seems a little less agile now when facing them.  But TB is a crafty winning quarterback and capable of finding advantages nobody else sees. So, the idea is not to let Mahomes get his team too far out in front. Mahomes is pure magic. But he will need that slight-of-hand as he is missing key left tackle Eric Fisher. Is he that agile and creative? Yes. But I also like TB’s energizer bunny rookie Linebacker Devin White chasing Patrick M. There’s a lot going on in my head on this one. I’m picking Kansas City 24 to 17. I think when it comes down to a key play or two, Andy Reid is the better coach.

I think the people from Williams College, Mystic Seaport and Brown University could have used a better title for their new joint project to re-explain New England history, “Reimagining New England History…”. “Reimagining” does make it all sound quite whimsical. It’s another of those increasingly annoying lookback efforts to measure 300-400 years against today’s societal norms.  Count me out in reimagining my past. I think a lot of people worked hard to get America to where it is today.

Denmark authorities are well on their way to developing and mandating the use of a Digital Passport which will show Covid Vaccination history to customs agents upon entry to the country. First, it’s vaccinations info and then it’s your life. Brave new world.

I have it from a very reliable source that Florida’s Covid vaccination program looks like a movie scene about the end of the world.

The Answer:

The comedian, entertainer Danny Thomas founded the St. Jude’s Hospital. Apparently as young struggling entertainer he made a promise to St. Jude Thaddeus that he would build a shrine to St. Jude, if he would help him support his family financially. He amassed a lot of money and he kept his promise in 1962 building the shrine which was the famed hospital that has saved the lives of many kids who would have died without it. His famous TV show was “Make Room for Daddy”, later changed to the Danny Thomas Show. Bonus: We have heard a lot about Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, and recently Johnson & Johnson. But late comers Novavax and AstraZeneca are also good and available, and expand the supply opportunities. Which one should we get? Experts say it doesn’t really matter, and it is highly unlikely we will have a choice anyway. They agree, “Any vaccine you get should do a pretty great job at protecting you against severe illness, along with hospitalization and death”.

The disorganization of Covid vaccination programs, state or federal, has had the effect of uniting people of all ideologies in their dismay of general ineptitude. It’s just give me a shot.

An infectious disease walks into a bar.  The bartender says, “We don’t serve your kind here.”  It replies, “Well, you’re not a very good host.”
