Science, Schmience

Today's Tids Issue 4,831

Dreamers:

What’s the difference between a dog and a marine Biologist? One wags its tale and the other tags a whale.

I just took a brisk walk along a sea wall in the gloom of this morning following the rage of a storm that didn’t quite live up to expectations. the winds blew me of my stride, as rough waters crested the top of the wall; surging neath docks and piers. The sea looking to escape from itself. It’s always good to watch the relentless sea, under fleeing clouds or beaming sunlight. This sea that surrounds us all never gives up. It is humbling. It can be the most peaceful place on Earth, the in an instant threaten your life. I love watching the seas. I like things that endure. I like being relentless and never giving up.

Do you know what is bothering me these days? The over use of the words “Science”.

It appears that retail traders are here to stay. The computer makes it so. And so does availability of no fee brokers, low interest rates, stimulus checks and plenty of time staging inside due to Covid and Cold. An association of four million retail traders will form and they will find a place at the big table with demands for inclusion. And they will talk about the power of ere marauding horde with their tireless machines and active fingers.

Things always change. And that is a pretty scientific statement.

But, it still feels like DotCom exuberance all over again.

Late buyers in the GameStop saga are probably getting killed today, and that is quite sad. But, unfortunately it is not surprising. There is no free lunch.

Science pick-up line: “You must be made of Copper and tellurium because you are cu-te! It o would take special kind of woman sitting in a bar that is raised.

The Question:

This year, no baseball player was voted into the Hall Of Fame. Who were the original 5 inductees? Bonus: Which one of them was known as “Big Train”?

The Headlines:

--Markets Bouncing Back; Alibaba Beats Estimates, Talks Of Monopoly Investigation Cooperation; US Competition Amazon To Report This Afternoon Along With Alphabet; Retail Trader Stocks Crater; GameStop Down 40% Following Yesterday’s 31% Drop. Down

--Phil Says Six More Weeks Of Winter.

-- Biden Meets With Repub Senators; Chance For Reconciliation Appears Minimal.

--Bienne Signs Exec Order To Reunite Separated Illegal Border Families.

--Impeachment Managers: “Trump Singularly Responsible For Riot.” (NY Times)

Ok, I give up. Stop with the Tom Brady, Gronk stories already. There are still almost six more full days to go. Aaarrrrrrrghhhhhh!

Consider what science hath wrought in the technology world and how little people understand what’s going on. For instance, Google-Earth gave us the opportunity to go and see anywhere in the world. So what do we do? We go and look at our house?

I heard somebody ask a question after a fairly logical lecture on climate change. The “Q” went something like this, “I hear that scientists may have a way to cool the seas.” Say what. Did I just make a left turn and wind up in Disneyland! Loony solutions will always rise in response to a faulty premise.  And if it preceded by te word Science, people will become adherents.

What does a subatomic duck say? Quark!

Speaking of science hath wrought, a lot of girl and woman athletes were really upset with Biden’s view as it may apply to transsexual athletes playing in girls and woman’s leagues on a very unscientific, “…what you say you are basis” (JB’s reference to justify male prisoners going to female pros ions) That’s what happens when Politicians try to keep wild eyed promises without thinking about collateral damage. People get hurt because politicians don’t care.

How many Bio- Scientists does it take to change a light bulb? Four. One to change it and three to write the environmental-impact statement.

I believe that the Impeachment managers went a bit overboard in their opening statement saying that “Trump singularly responsible for Riot” All the defense has to do is exhibit tone other person responsible to shoot down the premise of their main argument. I thought lawyers were smart. I take that back, Lawyers are smart. Hysterical, vengeful, politicians aren’t.

The Answer:

The first big five were Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christie Matthewson and Walter Johnson. Bonus: Johnson was Walter “Big Train” Johnson. The great sportswriter Grantland Rice named Johnson because of his size and because the express train was the fastest vehicle of the times.

So, “The doctor tells a woman that she has only six months to live. He advises her to marry a scientist and move to Toledo. The woman asks, “Will this cure my illness?” “No,” replies the doctor, “but it will make six months seem like a very long time.”

Sorry Scientists. You’ll all be billionaires, and I’ll still be writing the Tids and living in a shed by pond somewhere.
